Programme profile


This programme provides you with a comprehensive understanding of the processes, agents and structures in world politics. IRIO focuses on all aspects of international relations: historical, political, economic and legal perspectives are combined.  

The main emphasis of the programme iis on the functions of international organisations, and the processes leading to their creation. You are trained to see beyond one specialisation and to combine insights from various fields of study. A lot of attention is paid to research skills, language training, methodologies, historical context and theory.  The highly innovative programme provides you with a working knowledge of multilingual communication, negotiation in international forums, and other key competences that make up a complete toolkit for every internationally-oriented professional.

Programme content


Year 1: introductory modules in international relations, law and economics. You will also start language acquisition modules in the foreign language of your choice. An Introduction to European and International Law module will focus on the law of international organisations and international public law.

Year 2: a deeper exploration of international relations, economics and law. A module in policy and management will look at the functioning of state and society in a comparative perspective. Attention will be paid to political science, decision-making processes at national and international levels. government functioning and social influences on decision-making processes.

Year 3: further deepening of your knowledge and understanding. An International Law module will discuss the law of nations and the law of international organisations. In international relations you scrutinise the pros and cons of competing views of international politics and how to understand these. You will also practise your international negotiating skills in the module on international negotiation.

3 A-levels (CCC) + 3 GCSE (Grades between A and C), inc Maths.

Scottish Students are required to have a SQC with 2 Advanced Highers and at least 4 Highers. Subjects to include Maths.
