Programme profile

Knowledge and expertise in Chemistry and Molecular Biology is critical in many of the growth sectors of the 21st century: in the development of pharmaceuticals and vaccines, novel diagnostic and forensic techniques as well as within exercise and health sciences. This programme covers a broad spectrum in the fields of Chemistry and Molecular Biology where course content and teachers have a close link to leading research within fields such as Biochemistry, Infection Medicine, Microbiology and Environmental Chemistry. The programme provides both the theoretical and practical skills needed for a promising and interesting future carrier. Students can specialise in either Chemistry or Molecular Biology.

Molecular Biology focuses primarily on processes within living cells and cell physiology but also on mechanisms behind communication and interaction between cells. The results from research in Molecular Biology can be used to design and produce new medical drugs and vaccines, and to expand the knowledge in other areas of Health Sciences, as well as in Sport and Exercise Sciences. Techniques in Molecular Biology are used in Forensic Medicine, diagnosis of human diseases and Molecular Plant Development.

Chemists and chemistry are needed in many different areas. To understand the development of different diseases as well as to discover and synthesise the future medicines to treat these diseases, chemistry is crucial. Chemists are also working with the construction of new products that are better adaptable to the environment and hence less harmful to the surroundings.

Umea has several very successful research centres e.g. The Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden, Umea Centre for Molecular Medicine, Umea Centre for Microbial Research, Umea Plant Science Centre, Umea Marine Sciences Centre, Umea Centre for Sports Science.

Programme content

The programme commences in its first year with an introduction to Biological Chemistry covering subjects such as Modern Forensic Medicine, Sport and Health Sciences, Medicines of Tomorrow and Plant & Forest Biotechnology. This is followed by three modules in Chemistry: Fundamentals of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Bioorganic Chemistry.

The second year contains modules in Molecular Biology dealing with topics such as Microbiology, Basic Molecular Biology, Basic and Molecular Genetics, Cell Biology, and Physiology.

During the third year you can select advanced modules in Molecular Biology, Physiology or Chemistry or modules in other topics such as Sport and Health Sciences. The programme finishes with a Bachelor"s Thesis.
