Based on the Pedagogical University of Siauliai and the National Conservatory of Lithuania in Klaipeda, the University of Klaipeda was established in 1991. It is rapidly growing and currently has some 6,500 students.

The university comprises seven faculties: Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Humanities, Marine Engineering, Arts, Pedagogy, Social Sciences and Health sciences). It host 3 scientific research institutes: Baltic Coastal Research and Planning, Baltic Region History and Archaeology, Mechatronics.
