The University of Warmia and Mazury (UWM) was founded in 1999, after the merger of three educational institutions: the Academy of Agriculture and Technology, the Pedagogy College and the 450-year-old Warmian Theological Institute.  Its seventeen faculties educate almost 31 000 students: in a wide range of disciplines: humanities, pedagogy, theology, fine arts, law, veterinary medicine, agriculture, engineering, biology, economics, mathematics and, since the academic year of 2008/2009, medicine.

The University has a 230 hectare campus in Kortowo,  a picturesque part of city, surrounded by forests and lakes and the campus is reputed to be the most beautiful in the whole of Poland. The campus consists of research and teaching buildings, student dormitories and various other premises devoted to leisure, shopping and everyday life. Students can enjoy the use of various sport and recreational facilities.
