At Maastricht University last week, as part of the Annual Conference of Cambridge Occupational Analysts (COA), Guy Flouch [Director of EUNiCAS] facilitated an information session between seven of the leading universities in the Netherlands and over 70 Careers Advisors from English schools.

Drop of nearly 20% in numbers of Irish students applying to UK universities

2012 has seen a significant drop in the number of Irish students applying to join undergraduate programmes in the UK. The number of Irish students applying through UCAS [the university central admissions service in the UK] this year is down to 5,873, a drop of 19.2% on last year’s figures.

This drop is almost certainly largely due to the increase in tuition fees in England. Notably, the number of English students applying through UCAS is also down, by some 10%.

Fears of huge rise in third-level fees, in Ireland, of up to €6k

Families are facing the prospect of a huge hike in the fees for sending children to college.

Education Minister Ruairi Quinn has already signalled that charges would rise to €3,000 a year by September 2015. But that could now double to €6,000 in the wake of new recommendations.

In September, students will already be paying €2,250 in registration fees, with phased increases for each of the next three years. But a report being prepared for Mr Quinn is likely to conclude that there is no alternative to students paying even more.
