Fantastic Opportunities to Study in Italy

August 16, 2025

Italy is becoming one of the most popular study destinations for Irish students

In addition to English-taught programmes in Business, Politics/International Relations, Psychology, Architecture and Engineering, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, there are increasing numbers of programmes in Health Sciences, including:

– Medicine & Surgery
– Dentistry
– Veterinary Medicine
– Pharmacy
– Nursing

For entry to programmes in Italy, your Leaving Certificate points are irrelevant. Entry is usually through an entrance test. For Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary, the test is called IMAT.

Finally, the Italian government announced at lunchtime, on Friday last week, the registration timeline for IMAT 2025: 26th August until 9th September. The test in Dublin is on 17th September. And, yes, this is for entry this year!!! Tuition Fees (fixed with reference to family income) for all three subject areas are exceptionally low!!! (Yaay!!) For example, the fees to study Veterinary Medicine at the superb U. Bologna (Europe’s oldest university) are between Eur156 pa and Eur2400 pa.

The Ministry also confirmed last week: an increase in places for EU students, in both medicine (now 952 places) and dentistry (52) places. for this year.

Interestingly, there is a new application system to medicine degrees in Italy this year, for Medicine taught through Italian, akin to that currently operating in France. In summary, it is much easier to get into first year of the Italian-taught med programmes, but there is a big cull of students at the end of the year. In essence, many more students have a right to a medical education but they have to prove that they are up to it!! This could mean that there are fewer Italians applying this year for the English-taught programmes (as insurance choices). with reduced competition for places?

The two MSc Pharmacy programmes (in U. Bologna and U. Roma “Tor Vergata”) have just closed for entry this year

It is said that “If it seems to be too good to be true, its not true!” Well, in this case, its true!!
